Meeting Tebogo Sehomane

Some encounters begin with a handshake. Ours began with the hem of a pair of tailored trousers.

During the vibrant Soweto Boys Pop-Up at Mall of Africa, while joining the live 93.8FM fashion culture resident interview and celebrating local creativity, one detail immediately caught the attention of the founder of H-Studio (Chantal) , which was the impeccable DIY tailoring and hemming of artist Tebogo Sehomane's trousers. It was a simple observation that sparked their very first conversation, proving that style often speaks before words do.

As the event unfolded, Chantal introduced Tebogo to the Commission an Artist Initiative, recognising not only his distinctive sense of style but also the depth of his creative practice. In that moment, it became clear that this was more than an introduction, it was the beginning of what we believe will become a meaningful creative collaboration.

Today, we are proud to welcome Tebogo Sehomane as one of the artists joining the H-Studio Commission an Artist Initiative, a growing community of creatives whose work reflects purpose, culture, fashion sustainability and authentic storytelling.

Rooted in Tembisa, Inspired by Legacy

Born and raised in the heart of Tembisa, Tebogo's artistic journey was nurtured by the people and traditions surrounding him. His earliest inspirations came from watching his grandmother's craftsmanship and listening to the rich sounds of South African jazz played by his uncle. Together, they introduced him to the beauty of culture, heritage and creative expression.

Growing up in a township also meant witnessing the realities and limitations of poverty firsthand. Yet rather than allowing those circumstances to define him, Tebogo found in art a language of possibility—a way to imagine, create and work towards a brighter future.

Through painting, drawing and mixed media, he explores themes of African spirituality, self-empowerment and the dreams that carry us beyond our circumstances. Every piece becomes an invitation to reflect on identity, resilience and the enduring strength of culture.

Creating as a Spiritual Practice

For Tebogo, making art is far more than producing beautiful work, it is a deeply personal and spiritual ritual.

Painting, drawing and crafting ground him. They reconnect him with himself, his ancestors and generations of African makers whose creative practices continue to shape cultural movements today.

In his own words:

"It is said that the techniques used for hundreds of years have become embedded in our DNA."

This philosophy echoes throughout his practice. Each brushstroke becomes an act of remembrance, each drawing a conversation with history, and every artwork a bridge between the past, present and future.

He continues:

"The process of painting connects me to my deeper self, the God in me, my ancestors, and the long legions of men and women who have created cultural movement."

These words reveal an artist who understands creativity not simply as skill, but as inheritance, responsibility and spiritual connection.

Looking Forward

Meeting Tebogo reminded us that meaningful collaborations often begin in the most unexpected ways. A conversation about tailoring became a conversation about purpose. Style became a gateway to story. Story became the foundation for partnership.

At H-Studio, we believe in creating spaces where artists are celebrated not only for what they create, but for who they are and what they represent within their communities.

We are excited to welcome Tebogo Sehomane into the H-Studio Initiative and look forward to supporting his creative journey as he continues to inspire through art rooted in culture, spirituality and hope.

Welcome to the family, Tebogo. Your story, your vision and your voice are a powerful addition to our growing community of artists.
